Numeracy Learning

LCSD's Numeracy Vision

We strive for our students to become numerate beyond school and have confidence and competence in using numbers which will allow them to solve problems, analyze information and make informed decisions based on their exploration and discoveries.

What is Numeracy?

Alberta Education defines numeracy as the ability, confidence and willingness to engage with quantitative and spatial information to make informed decisions in all aspects of daily living.

 Qualitative Info and Spatial Info

A Numerate Individual

A numerate individual has the confidence and awareness to know when and how to apply quantitative and spatial understandings at home, at school, at work or in the community.

What do Numeracy Rich Learning Environments Look Like at LCSD?

We have learning environments that promote and enhance the discovery of numbers to provide our students with the opportunity to become numerate.

As a result, students are able to make connections to the real world through:

  • active learning and planned, purposeful play in Kindergarten

  • interest and enthusiasm for numeracy by being taught with a variety of instructional strategies

  • development of problem-solving capabilities

  • explaining their thinking (number talks)

  • using technology in appropriate and effective ways to enhance their learning experience

  • being taught with assessment strategies including but not limited to Assessment for Learning and Assessment of Learning, to help foster an understanding of the purpose and relevance of activities

  • both independent and collaborative learning

  • making frequent links across the curriculum, so that concepts and skills are developed further by being applied in different and relevant contexts

  • engaging in community involvement with cross curricular learning and real world experiences to show the relevance of numeracy
