Through the Provincial Dual Credit Strategy, our District has had the opportunity to develop an Oil and Gas Foundations pathway in collaboration with Lakeland College and Imperial Oil. This pathway is an introduction to the oil industry in Alberta. Students develop knowledge and understanding of the oil industry, the origins of oil, and methods of location and extraction. Students gain an understanding of basic chemistry and the origin of hydrocarbons.
Senior high school students from Assumption Junior/Senior High School completed this course within their science classes this year. We set the course up so that it was delivered in senior high school science classes, as part of the exploratory flex block (High School Redesign) and as a field experience on site at Imperial Oil’s Cold Lake Operations. As a result of this course, many of our students have decided to pursue careers in the oil and gas industry including: Field Operator, Plant Operator, Millwright, Instrumentation Technician, Environmental Monitoring and Testing, Engineer and many other occupations.
